Fresh Ebonyi/Cross River border crisis claims eight lives

Updated Dec 16 2018 11:12 am

Fresh crisis between Ebonyi and Cross River states, which erupted penultimate Sunday, has led to the death of eight persons and burning of over 52 houses.

It was also learnt that no fewer than 80 persons had been missing since the crisis began.

The crisis is said to have led to the displacement of over 5,000 indigenes of Urugban community, who are currently taking refuge in  three Internally Displaced Persons camps in Amagwu Ohafia and Ekoli Edda, in Abia and Ebonyi states.

Our correspondent gathered that three persons from Afikpo South Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, whose names were given as Mmecha Ibe, Sam Oko and Olughu Enworo, were reportedly beheaded in the renewed crisis, in addition to corpses of some five aged women allegedly burnt during the incident.

A source, who pleaded anonymity, told SUNDAY PUNCH that trouble started when one Mr Felix Ezeamama, an Anambra businessman, allegedly connived with Egbor people and had them lease a parcel of land jointly owned by Urugbam, Egbor and Ekoli Edda communities, without the consent of the other two communities (Urugban and Ekoli Edda), who co-own the land.

The Cross River State Police Command confirmed the development but said the matter was being blown out of proportion.

Spokesperson for the command, Irene Ugbo, told our correspondent on the telephone on Saturday that two persons had lost their lives, four persons injured and 52 houses burnt in the crisis.

Ugbo said, “This issue is blown out of proportion. We, in a meeting with all the parties involved, resolved that everybody should be calm and allow peace to reign.

“In the crisis, two persons died, four injured and 52 houses were burnt down. So, it’s not eight persons that died as it is being claimed.”
