My father was my best friend, mischief partner −Ras Kimono’s daughter, Oge

Since popular reggae singer, Ras Kimono, passed on in 2018, his daughter, Oge, has kept his memory alive by staying true to her passion for his style of music.

In a chat with Saturday Beats, Oge noted that her passion for music began as a child. She said, “As early as when I was 10 years old, I had interest in not only music but entertainment generally. I guess you can say it’s in my DNA as I found myself drawn to singing and dancing, especially at home when my grandmother would have me entertain her guests. I also joined the choirs in my school and church.

“Growing up as Ras Kimono’s child was quite a privileged experience. My formative years were spent with my grandmother who did a great job keeping me away from the public eye until my teenage years. From then on, me and my dad built a rather strong bond as he became my best friend, mischief partner, advisor and guardian. I had a memorable childhood experience.”

The singer also maintained that her father taught her the importance of honing one’s craft.  “My father was a prophet and a man of wisdom with high morals and he imparted a lot to me. Some of the things I learnt from him were his love for mankind, his upright ways, readiness to speak the truth regardless of the situation, staying true to himself, being original, mastering his art and bettering himself at every given opportunity. He taught me the importance of honing one’s craft through continuous practice as he always said practice made perfect.”
